In order for a team to be effective, there has to be different strengths and weaknesses among the members along with shared goals and open communication. I have never been placed in a situation where I have been free to hand pick the members of a team I am in charge of. Rather, teams I participate in are thrown together randomly by teachers or coaches and then we have to figure out how to work together. This means that each member must be considered to discover their strengths and weaknesses. Once these are known, then roles can be assigned and the goal can be clearly understood by each individual. Once the logistics of the team are established, then clear communication must be implemented. In order to work effectively, each member of the team needs to know how to effectively and respectfully communicate with the other members of their team. This includes giving criticism in a tactful manner. Establishing and developing trust is also an important part of an effective team. Junior year, I learned the importance of communication during my work with the no excuses university program. The teacher we held communication with often did not respond in a timely manner. When she did respond, our group had to be ready to respond to her and act on what she had said as soon as possible.
